I don't know about you, but there are times when I want to become more spiritual. There is a difference between religious and spiritual these days. Religion has to do more with going to church or organized religion; but spirituality is finding God outside of the religious institution. You've probably heard the term, "spiritual, but not religious," well today I'd like to offer us some ways to practice our spirituality.

Understanding Spirituality

Before we delve into the practices that can help you embrace spirituality, let's take a moment to understand what spirituality truly means. Spirituality is a deeply personal and subjective experience that involves seeking a connection to something greater than oneself. It goes beyond religious affiliations and doctrines, focusing on personal growth, self-reflection, and finding a sense of purpose in life.

1. Cultivating Daily Meditation

One powerful practice to invite spirituality into your life is through daily meditation. Meditation allows you to quiet your mind, find inner peace, and tap into your spiritual essence. Begin each day with a few minutes of meditation, even if it's just for a minute. Set aside a quiet space where you can sit comfortably, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Allow thoughts to come and go without judgment, and simply observe the sensations in your body. With consistent practice, you will experience a greater sense of calm, clarity, and connectedness throughout your day.

If you find your mind wandering, try a breath prayer. Something like: "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner." Or, "The Lord is my Sheperd, I lack for nothing."

2. Nourishing Your Soul with Spiritual Reading

Incorporating spiritual literature into your daily routine can be a powerful way to deepen your understanding of spirituality. Books like "Holy Shift!" by Robert Holden and "A Year of Miracles" by Marianne Williamson offer daily reflections and insights that can inspire and uplift your spirit. "Searching for Sunday" by Rachel Held Evans offers powerful reflections on the seasons and cycles of the church year. The Bible is another good thing to read, even if it is a page or a couple of verses at a time. If you're looking for a place to start, I would recommend the Gospel of John or even Paul's letter to the Ephesians. Reflect on the wisdom shared and allow it to guide you on your spiritual journey.

3. Practicing Gratitude

Gratitude is a transformative practice that can shift your perspective and invite more positivity into your life. Take a moment each morning, as soon as you wake up, to express gratitude for something in your life. It could be as simple as being alive, the warmth of the sun, or the presence of a loved one. Keeping a gratitude journal can also be a meaningful way to cultivate gratitude. Make it a habit to jot down things you are grateful for each day, and notice how this practice brings a sense of joy and appreciation to your life.

4. Connecting with Nature

Nature has a way of grounding us and reminding us of our interconnectedness with the world. Especially as we enter Fall and the colors begin to show forth, bask in the changes taking place. Take a walk in the park, tend to a garden, or simply sit outside and observe the sights and sounds around you. Leave your phone behind and allow yourself to be fully present in the moment. Notice the sensation of the breeze on your skin, the fragrance of flowers, and the intricate details of nature. Connecting with nature can help you find solace, peace, and a deeper sense of spirituality.

5. Harnessing the Power of Mindful Breathing

Mindful breathing is a simple yet powerful technique that can help you cultivate presence and find inner calm. Incorporate breathing exercises throughout your day to ground yourself and invite a sense of peace. Take a moment to pause and focus on your breath, particularly during moments of stress or overwhelm. One technique you can try is the Sweet 16 Breath Technique:

  1. Inhale deeply for a count of 4.
  2. Hold your breath for a count of 4.
  3. Exhale slowly for a count of 4.
  4. Hold the exhale for a count of 4.
  5. Repeat this cycle 4 times.

By practicing mindful breathing, you can cultivate a greater sense of awareness, become less reactive, and respond to life's challenges with grace and clarity.

6. Seeking Guidance and Support

Embarking on a spiritual journey can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially if you're navigating it alone. Seek guidance and support from spiritual communities, mentors, or trusted friends who share similar spiritual beliefs. Engage in conversations, attend workshops or retreats, and participate in group meditation sessions. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals can provide encouragement, inspiration, and a sense of belonging as you explore and deepen your spirituality.

7. Embracing Self-Reflection and Forgiveness

Self-reflection is a crucial aspect of spirituality as it allows you to gain insight into your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Take time each day to reflect on your experiences and actions, and how they align with your spiritual values. Practice self-forgiveness and extend forgiveness to others, releasing any negative emotions that may hinder your spiritual growth. Embracing self-reflection and forgiveness fosters personal growth, compassion, and a greater sense of peace within yourself and your relationships.

8. Infusing Spirituality into Daily Activities

Spirituality is not confined to meditation or specific practices; it can permeate every aspect of your life. Infuse spirituality into your daily activities by incorporating mindfulness and intention. Whether it's cooking, cleaning, or engaging in hobbies, approach each task with presence and gratitude. Cultivate a sense of reverence for the ordinary moments of your life, recognizing that even the most mundane activities can hold profound meaning and lessons for personal growth.

Incorporating spirituality into your daily life is a transformative journey that can bring hope, joy, and a deeper sense of purpose. By practicing meditation, nurturing your soul through spiritual reading, cultivating gratitude, connecting with nature, harnessing mindful breathing, seeking guidance and support, embracing self-reflection and forgiveness, and infusing spirituality into daily activities, you can invite spirituality into every aspect of your life. Embrace this journey with an open heart and a willingness to explore the depths of your soul. May your spiritual path lead you to a life filled with peace, love, and spiritual fulfillment.
